Director of Development

Job description

Director of Development | Calgary | $95k–$115k + Benefits + Performance Bonus

The Opportunity:

My client is searching for a Director of Development to lead and grow its talented dev team. As a strategic and hands-on leader, you’ll be instrumental in shaping the direction of the development practice, refining technical processes, and mentoring a high-performing team of developers. If you’re a seasoned technical leader with a passion for building both people and products—and you thrive in a fast-paced, creative environment—we want to meet you.

You’ll work closely with strategy, design, and marketing teams to bring high-impact websites, web applications, and marketing technology to life. This is a role for someone ready to step beyond code and into a position of influence, mentorship, and technical excellence.

The Role:

  • Lead and inspire a team of developers, setting a high bar for technical quality and collaborative culture.
  • Define and evolve the team’s processes, architecture standards, and project workflows.
  • Own technical decision-making on client and internal projects, balancing performance, scalability, and budget.
  • Serve as the bridge between development, strategy, and client services—translating technical concepts into actionable plans.
  • Mentor and grow your team by supporting learning paths, conducting code reviews, and leading performance conversations.
  • Oversee resource planning to ensure smooth delivery and project success.
  • Support hiring and onboarding of new developers as the team scales.
  • Contribute to development work on high-priority projects or during crunch periods.

Requirements:

  • 6+ years of professional web development experience.
  • 3+ years in a leadership role (e.g., Lead Developer, Team Lead, or Development Manager).
  • Deep expertise in WordPress, PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
  • Proven experience with version control (e.g., Git), deployment pipelines, and performance optimization.
  • A strategic mindset—able to balance business needs with technical execution.
  • Experience leading dev teams in agency or fast-paced, client-facing environments.
  • Strong communication skills and comfort working with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Bonus Points For:

  • Experience with Shopify, Laravel, Gatsby, or modern JavaScript frameworks.
  • Familiarity with hosting setups, DNS, SSL, and server optimization.
  • Understanding of Core Web Vitals and SEO performance indicators.
  • Background in or alignment with digital marketing strategies.
