The Role
Our client is seeking an experienced Research Manager to lead impactful Environmental Assessment (EA) projects. This role is integral in supporting Indigenous-led assessments, guiding communities through federal, provincial, and territorial EA processes, and ensuring that projects align with the principles of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC).
The Research Manager will spearhead interdisciplinary technical reviews, develop innovative assessment methodologies, and work closely with Indigenous communities to ensure their knowledge, values, and priorities shape the decision-making process. This is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact while contributing to industry-leading research that upholds Indigenous rights and environmental sustainability.
This role can be based in British Columbia (BC), Alberta (AB), or Ontario (ON), with remote work options available. Up to 10 days of travel per month is required.
Indigenous candidates are highly preferred.
Requirements
- At least 7 years of relevant experience in Environmental Assessment, with a focus on Indigenous engagement and assessment.
- Master’s degree or equivalent experience in EA, environmental sciences, Indigenous governance, or a related field.
- Extensive experience working with Indigenous communities, demonstrating cultural awareness, expertise in Indigenous research methodologies, and a commitment to supporting Indigenous rights and self-determination.
- Proven ability to conduct technical reviews and develop methodologies such as rights impact assessments, cumulative effects assessments, and alternatives assessments.
- Strong project management skills, including budget oversight, team coordination, and timeline management.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders, including Indigenous communities, regulatory agencies, and interdisciplinary teams.
- Experience supervising and mentoring research staff is an asset.
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 10 days per month as required.

Responsibilities
As a Research Manager, your key responsibilities will include:
Technical Leadership:
- Lead the design, strategy, and execution of EA projects, ensuring methodologies align with Indigenous rights, priorities, and values.
- Support Indigenous communities in navigating EA processes and engaging with regulatory agencies.
- Conduct rigorous research, including interviews, focus groups, and technical analysis to generate meaningful insights.
- Oversee interdisciplinary collaboration, integrating ecological, social, economic, and cultural research perspectives.
- Develop and deliver training programs to build community capacity in EA processes.
Project Management:
- Oversee project scope, budgets, and schedules to ensure timely and high-quality delivery.
- Manage internal teams, external consultants, and Indigenous community partners to align with project objectives.
- Ensure quality control and security of research data, maintaining compliance with organizational protocols.
Client Engagement:
- Build and maintain strong, trust-based relationships with Indigenous communities and partners.
- Act as a primary point of contact for clients, ensuring their needs and priorities guide project execution.
- Provide strategic recommendations to Indigenous leadership and organizations on EA processes and negotiations.
People Leadership:
- Mentor and supervise research staff, fostering a supportive and inclusive team culture.
- Collaborate with leadership to strengthen internal capacity and enhance research methodologies.
- Promote knowledge-sharing across teams and contribute to thought leadership in the field.
